Interview with Brian Deflections

September 27/9-2k

Recently I got an email from a guy asking me about Brain Deflections and telling me about how he freaked on the matter that they are actually from Greece. I bet most of you will feel the same way. Brain Deflections are not that much known in their native country but that didn't stoped them from getting a contract with Nephilim Records. "Horizontal-Y" is out now and you can find a few words from me about it by following this link (Horizontal-Y review).

Brain Deflections are actually George, Nick and Thanos (I only use the first names coz' listing surnames is a bit too serious and impersonal for a community based scene like ours). Three guys that are actually from Larisa (which is more famous about its connection to cheese than trance but...) prooving that things are not only moving in Athens or Thessaloniki.

The Deflection crew has one hell of history behind it, Thanos started as radio DJ back in 1989 representing the alternative styles of that decade whereas George and Nick formed the team "Hypnosis" in 1994, a more open minded party project that had a major impact in the local scene. Despite that though, the people are "real" musicians too with Thanos being a bass player and Nick being a trumpet player so they know a thing or two about tuning or time keys.

What follows next is an interview I had with the guys and in this point I have to thank them all and especially Thanos (he did the hard work) for being friendly and co-operative.

1. How and when you got the Goa bug ?

Answer : Thanos: For me it was during 1995 ,i had my first Psy-Trance tapes from my good friend and now partner Giorgos and other friends. Till this time iīve heard many different music styles and to much stuff from the alternative area and i was used to go from time to time to techno and house parties. After those first tapes i began to buy my first Cdīs and then Vinyl`s and so it goes.... Giorgos: i have to say that it is important to have continuation and search. In the process of searching if you find something that you like very much, thatīs a very big thing. But if you stuck is not so good. What is the Goa bug really ?

2. What made you to cross borders and become producers ?

Answer : Thanos: I had engaged somehow always with music, neither as fan as Dj or amateur bass player.I have tried often with other people to play some music but i always really wanted to compose music. As i and my good friend Giorgos spoke with Nikos about this, it had happened already................. Giorgos: It depends what do you want and what are you searching for . If you search you find.

3. What equipment you use and what is your favourite piece of gear ?

Answer :Thanos & Giorgos: We work up until now for the most surprising without computer but with a workstation and there are some synths old and new ones,a sampler and other sound modules.... Favourite piece of gear ?? Everything we have and we dont have. As we wrote on our Cd : Everything(anything)thatīs existing everywhere(anywhere) !

4. How things envolved and you finally made a contract deal with one of trance scene's major players, Nephilim Recordings ?

Answer :Thanos&Giorgos: Things involved when we had a lot of tracks made and we make a contact with Nephilim Recordings and there was an interesting for our work. That was, after some conversations, the contract deal. And it was very good of course because our first release was the last days of february 2000.

5. What is your opinion about the Greek trance scene ?

Answer :Thanos: Sorry, but iīm not so often in Greece in the last years and i can not say about this and i think it would be exaggerate from me to make some comments...from what i hear from Giorgos it always happens something and several people have nice time thereby. Giorgos:My opinion is that always is something going on and on in the greek trance scene.

6. Any greek Djs or producers you admire ?

Answer :Thanos:Look my last answer !! For the last time i have heard some tracks of Wizzy Noise from different compilations and i found all very good.Sorry to all other producers that they doing their best in greece and unfortunately didnīt happend to know them until now. Giorgos: Of course, Brain Deflections,Wizzy Noise,Rules of Hypothalamus, Magus,Neuro-D.....and many others whom their names know or i donīt know.

7. Favourite international Djs or bands ?

Answer :Thanos: Aha.....a heavy question. There are different music styles and directions,DJ`s,Projects, and Bands that i like.So spontaneously i have to name a very few of them all : Dj Carl Cox and from here where iīm now Djīs like Dj Lando and a friend Dj Spacer Trancy. So about projects then: i could say Juno Reactor. Giorgos: As my friend says it is a difficult question but unfortunately i donīt want to tell some Projects or djīs, because itīs a lot that are favourite and thank them all.

8. Best trance album by your opinion ?

Answer :Thanos: Yes,still a question....there are so many and not only trance. As we speak then about trance i make it simple for me and i choose one album : Bible of Dreams-Juno Reactor. Giorgos: Itīs very Difficult question because as i said before itīs a lot of best trance albums and thatīs why i donīt want to peak up an album i think itīs best by my opinion.

9. What is the future direction of the trance sound, is funk O.K by you or things should get psychedelic again ?

Answer :Thanos & Giorgos: TRANCE IS TRANCE FUNK IS FUNK TECHNO IS TECHNO etc.,etc.,etc.... But it depends what everyone likes about future direction of trance sound. We could say that because trance is something different not forget the psychedelic part. Anyway,we think that everything is psychedelic, isnīt it ?.....

10. What are your future plans ?

Answer :Thanos&Giorgos: Another new track will be released in Nephilimīs new compilation around November. A lot of ideas and plans are in our minds but who knows, will see......

11. How people react to a greek trance band ?

Answer :Thanos&Giorgos:The reaction from all we have experienced,we think is good and we wish that they like our work and have a lot of pleasure!

12. What is your advice to newstarters ?

Answer: Thanos&Giorgos: O.K. donīt forget we are newstarters still but we can say a few things until now ,like the production which has to be clear and careful and at last you have to choose the right Label for your work. Be patienced and work on .

13. Give a wish :

Answer: Thanos: In the end i want to say to all people that they read this text to take care of their selves and take care ,also, for the other people.I hope to all of them to find everything they want and everything they need. Giorgos: I wish, not only A wish for You but a million wishees for all of You.
