Brain Deflections "Horizontal-Y" CD review
September 27/9-2k
Brain Deflections caught me by surprise I didn't expect a group from Larissa having such a mature sound, it is certainly not my cup of tea since I am known for my phunky
tunes but this is deep in every sense, apart from some commercial cuts in here
most of the tracks are deep night groovers for those brain teasing moments. Their
sound is a bit old school I would say but the arrangement and layering makes up for
it.
The CD kicks off with "Time Split" which prepares you about what is coming next,
dark and minimalistic with acid overtones and abstract effects. Growling dark
monster "Extremely Out" follows next, serious brain damage, best listened with
lights out. In contrast with the french "Deja Vu" Brain Deflections offer "Future
Flash" which manages to frustrate me with its Tsouf Tsouf kick-drum but again the
arrangement and sequencing is tight and precise.
Lead single "Horizontal-Y" is up next starting off with some high frequency
resotones (this word has just been invented by me I reserve every right of... O.K I
am fine now thanx) while moving along into more tripy arrangement with groovy
drums programming and rhythmic fx drops. A more bouncy feeling seems to
emerge in the last minutes as the track gets a bit funkier too but then it dives into
darkness again making this review a tough work to do.
Follower "Infinite Night Sky" presents us with some clever breakbeat trickery before
diving into classic lead-driven trance leaving me in the cold. Whirl is a funky effect
that can be achieved either from Photoshop © or through serious chemical abuse
but "Space Whirl" is simple the best track in here, it reminds me of some Alienated
old classics. Minimal heads down sound that repeats and repeats till you reach
switch off situation.
"How Far Can We Go ?" is a question I can not answer but I do know that is the flip
side of the 12" that Brain Deflections have released though Nephilim. Again the
band balances between light and dark with a slightly funkier feeling, you know thick
snares and rolling programming just to make the track a bit more dancefloor
friendly. Final cut "Thought Vibration" is no different than the others but just as high,
ends up this CD leaving you in a good mood.
Overall this CD is good with the average bpms being over 146, the feeling being
right and the production doing its job good. My personal opinion is that if you like the
European (especially German) sound of looping basslines and massive effects on
top but with a more deep feel and definitely more psychedelic then this CD is made
for you. What I liked in this CD is that the guys are serious they put a lot in this work
and it shows, they have their sound, they know their equipment and they are in a
good way. People should support these guys not because their from Greece but
because their really good in what they do.
