Various - "Experience" © Psy Harmonics Records

There is an old Monty Pythons’ movie that is named “…and now for something completely different”. I believe that this title suits this compilation perfectly. Following from where the “SuperMindAway” album left us, the new Psy-Harmonics sound feels like progressive rock to me. Merging the electronic sounds of dance music with the raw power of the guitar, this new wave of electrorock music is more than interesting. The industrial element is still there but forget your trance or techno kids. There are no such things in this compilation. Psy-Harmonics is out of the psychedelic trance league and moves straight to moody bars and open-air concerts. The new sound is like punk, you feel like bringing the house down…

The finest examples of Australian (and not only) music are here for our pleasure. A double CD full of musical dynamites plus some ambient moments at times. Some tracks could do some damage to floors beyond the usual target group of electronic music. I can only dream how a gothic, new wave crowd would react to “Like no other”, a long extravaganza of repetitive drums and guitar riffs that stick into your brain. This is music to let your rage out. No happy poppy vibe, just pure old raw energy that everybody seem to have and usually hide into the sub consciousness. This is primitive music hitting into primitive spots of our existence, not to mention that it is fresh. It is a fresh sound that boosted my faith in music again. I was very bored with music before this came to my mailbox. I have my enthusiasm back now and I am sure yours will come back to you if you give some space to this music. Many people will get alienated with this sound, most of you may say there is no 4/4 kickdrum or this is not techno this is rock… But what is wrong with rock ehh ? Rock is good music especially when passed through 21st centuries filters.

Most of the names featured in here will be more than familiar to your ear. Shaolin Wooden Men, The Visitors, Ad Astra, Hesius Dome, Joujouka, Rip Van Hippy and others have their big or little history behind them and the music shows. From the chords of depression featured in “Angel mutator” by Shaolin Wooden Men, to Ito’s happy blender “Nurokic”, this compilation smells quality even from the covers (poor Mona Lisa has been manipulated by Andrew so bad I think she needs vacations). Dunno but this bar-like feeling of this compilation is spinning in my head all the time. It’s like old friends meeting again and telling stories in a smelly bar after they have completed the most difficult task of all… Finding their purpose of existence to this planet.

It would be a shame to actually tell which tracks I liked and which not. All tracks have their story behind them and a separation between good or bad would be out of focus… not all stories can be about winning money or getting the girl right ? Anyway I will pick up some in random order just to say some words more. I already talked about “Like no other” with one of the most powerful guitar riffs I have heard in my life. Rip Van Hippy’s freeform “Metaworld” also one great sonic experiment. As is the “Cosmodrome” by Hesius Dome with it’s fresh drumming.

Overall this is a wonderful compilation, it deserves your money. It is a musical investment, something that you will give to your teenage kids to listen after the time has passed and they will say “Wow dad you had some rough times back then”. It is fresh air, not old things done differently, to say it in other words, it is A NEW MUSICAL STYLE. Sounds “like no other” just to use Testeagles words. For the long followers of Psy-Harmonics I need to tell no more words because most of them will have this, even if only for collectivity reasons. For the new comers, well forget your trance at first, borrow some psychedelic rock albums from your father and open your mind. Personally I loved it first sight and got my excited back. Long live the harmonics to offer us some of the best music around.
