SOUNDMAGUS` CUBASE 4 TUTORIAL DVD COMMING SOON !

Hi fellow sonic producers ;)

In the next 2 months I will be releasing my Cubase 4 tutorial DVD to the public and thought I would share some of the contents here with you.

The DVD itself will cover everything in Cubase from beginner to advanced levels.

It will also include a selection of other videos which actually show you how to use some of the features instead of

just explaining them, this is a feature you wont find anywhere else on any other Cubase tutorial DVD`s.

This section of the DVD will mainly be targeted at Dance Music Production but the principles can be used in any "genre" of music production created using Cubase.

Another completely original aspect to the DVD is the FREE REAL TIME SUPPORT for all users who purchase the DVD.

Each user will be supplied with a unique username & password which will allow them to access the real time support section of the web site where the support features will be made available to them with full tutorials on how to implement them.  The REAL TIME SUPPORT will last for 30 days for each user then further support will be supplied through email contact and further video`s on Cubase 4/SX.

The DVD itself is just me going through Cubase step by step showing you everything you need to know to get up and running.

I have been teaching Cubase for several years now and am confident in my premise that "once you learn the basics of Cubase your knowledge will grow exponentially the more you use it" which in turn will help you create your favourite type of music faster, better, and with much more confidence.

As I am not an actor the DVD does have all my bad grammer, my mistakes, my coughing etc and sometimes I do get carried away with myself and get totally lost in the enjoyment of what I am doing, sometimes funny, sometimes just very scary !

Here is a short list of the some of the subjects I cover - in no particular order.

  • Midi and Midi Editing
  • Tracks
  • Tools
  • Vst Connections
  • The Mixer
  • Key Commands and Macros
  • Key Editor
  • Drum Editor
  • Advanced Mixing
  • Advanced EQ
  • The Pool
  • Automation
  • Offline Processing
  • Time Warp
  • Advanced Quantize
  • Transpose Track

There will also be lots of videos using Vst`s for certain things like Drum Loops, Basslines, Creating Kick Drums etc.

This is a no holds barred DVD, I wont be showing you something then keeping the important stuff from you.

My purpose is to have everyone who watches this DVD making their own professional sounding Dance Music

(or any other genre for that matter) at home or in their studio by using Cubase (and the vsts I use during the videos) to its fullest.

Some of the VST`S I will also be doing Videos with are :
  • Native Instruments Battery 3
  • Native Instruments Reaktor
  • Native Instruments Massive
  • Native Instruments FM8
  • Rob Papens Albino 3

I will also show you how to make a kick drum using Adobe Audition then how to tune that to your bassline using Kontakt 3 from Native Instruments.

All in all i think you will agree that the DVD will give you everything you need and much much more besides to get you up to a very high standard in Music Production with Cubase 4. Dont worry if you are using Cubase SX, any specific question which I dont cover in the DVD can be asked of me via email and I will create a video for them also and upload it to the members area.

If this DVD is a success I plan to create more DVD`s in the future.

The next one will be a complete track from start to finish.  It will be a complete, no holds barred video with all the joys and the crazy, crying moments etc that come with the voyage of creating a complete dance track from start to finish - so watch this space.

Oh and one last thing, I have 20 slots for those of you who would like to preview 5 of the videos and tell me what you think.

Those 20 people will be given 50% of the full price of the DVD (£99/$150) and the Real Time Support as long as they supply me with usefull feedback on the videos.

If you are interested contact me on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it - but be quick 20 places is not a lot.

Thanks for reading and it wont be too long before the complete DVD is ready to go so keep yourself posted either by using the RSS feed or send me an email to the email above and i will let you know of the release date.

All the best and happy producing ;)

Mark (a.k.a. soundmagus)

Steinberg’s Cubase 4 – All it’s cracked up to be? PDF Print E-mail

Being an avid Cubase user since Cubase v3.4 I have always been in love with this program and look upon myself as being an advanced user.

So when I heard about Cubase 4 being released I was jittery with excitement regarding all the new features and advanced tools which were promised. After eagerly awaiting the release I went out and got the product hot off the shelf.

I have now been using Steinberg’s Cubase 4 for over 6 months and have to say it’s superb, the new mixer functions alone blow me away; the way the routing is set up is so intuitive that if feels almost too simple as if you have missed something.

The new VST3 technology is a god sends to anyone with a less than powerful computer. The VST3 plug-ins only use CPU when there is actually audio passing through the device which means if you have a section of audio on a channel and you have it running through the Steinberg Cubase 4 VST3 delay the delay plug-in only uses CPU when the audio is ACTUALLY playing. It’s almost as if the plug-ins turn themselves off to save CPU intelligently, it’s like they know they don’t need to be on until the audio passes through them. This is an awesome advance in technology and leaves all other DAW`s far behind.

The Media Bay is nothing short of genius! This tool allows you to search, manage and categorize any type of media file. This includes audio files, midi, vst plug-ins, track presets, project files and video files. It`s like having a super efficient secretary or PA who knows where everything is in an instant, it’s just such a time saver and it’s so easy to use it saves you so much time that you can almost work twice as fast as you normally would.

The final section I wish to talk about regarding Steinberg’s Cubase 4 is a feature I love but you don’t see mentioned anywhere (which seems odd to me). The VST Plug-in rack! It’s pretty much the same as it always has been, you still open it with F11 and you still enter the vsts by clicking on the insert section and the plug-in is inserted into the appropriate slot. Now imagine this, you have a small monitor or multiple vst instruments in your rack, your mixer fills up extremely quickly and you have to keep moving your mixers slider to see all the channels (which can be a real pain on a small monitor) you are using. Now in the vst rack there is a little arrow next to the instrument that you can press which then brings up the multiple outputs for that instrument. This allows you to activate or deactivate any amount of channels for the plug-in which means that instead of having multiple outputs open on your mixer (which you may not use) you can have only the ones which are being utilised open. This is fantastic! It means you save space and CPU due to the interface not having to use extra ram to show unwanted or unused channels. To me this is an unknown and underutilized function which should be admired and used to its fullest.

Steinberg`s Cubase 4 represents the cutting edge in digital audio workstations and is number 1 in the DAW market in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, I know there are other great tools out there, most notably Apples Logic 8, however if you are a PC user then you are out of luck as Logic is for Apple Macs only whereas Steinberg’s Cubase 4 is cross platform. The only gripe I will mention is on behalf of the Mac users, the manual is based on PC users so it can be a tad tiresome and difficult for Apple Mac users to get their head round and Steinberg’s Technical support leaves a lot to be desired. In the end Cubase is a highly intuitive, flexible and extremely advanced DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) application which ticks all the boxes and only continues to improve at a lightning pace and helps keep those of us who love the program happy and productive.
